The Row Formula: How to Dress Effortlessly Elegant

I have always liked minimalist fashion, but I also think minimalism can easily start feeling a bit repetitive. A neutral coat, wide trousers, simple knitwear… after a while, a lot of brands begin blending together. Then there is The Row. Somehow their outfits always stand out to me, even though they are often the simplest ones.

What I find interesting about The Row is that, on paper, the outfits are usually very basic. A long coat, flat sandals, oversized trousers, a knit. Nothing revolutionary. But when you actually look at the styling, the proportions, the fabrics, and the way everything falls on the body, the outfits feel completely different.

The silhouettes are softer, the fabrics move beautifully, and there is never too much happening at once. The outfits feel elegant without looking overly polished or overstyled.

And honestly, I think that is also why so many people are drawn to the brand right now. At a time when fashion can feel very trend-focused and performative, The Row makes simplicity feel incredibly refined again.

So if you have ever looked at a The Row outfit and thought, “Why does this look so much better than everyone else wearing basics?”, these are the styling details I think make the difference.

Relaxed tailoring is everything

One thing I always notice in The Row outfits is how soft the tailoring feels. The trousers skim the legs instead of clinging to them. The coats fall straight instead of being heavily cinched. Even the knitwear usually has a bit of looseness to it.

I think this is a big part of why the outfits look so elegant. The silhouettes create movement when the person walks, which immediately makes the clothes feel more luxurious.

But at the same time, the proportions are still controlled. The outfits do not look huge or exaggerated. There is usually balance somewhere else in the look.

For example:

  • wide trousers with a cleaner top
  • a long oversized coat with flat simple shoes
  • relaxed shirting with tailored trousers
  • soft knitwear with bare ankles or structured bags

That balance is important. If everything is oversized at once, the outfit starts losing the refinement that makes The Row aesthetic work in the first place

The fabrics are doing half the work

I honestly do not think The Row aesthetic would work in cheap fabrics.

So much of the look comes from texture, weight, and movement. The wool looks dense and soft at the same time. The knits have structure without feeling stiff. Even the cotton pieces somehow hold their shape beautifully.

This is also why many minimalist outfits fall flat. When the fabrics are too thin, too synthetic, or too stiff, simplicity can end up looking basic instead of luxurious.

The Row outfits work because the fabrics add depth, even when the colors are very neutral and the silhouettes are understated.

I elaborate more on good quality fabrics in my post How to Spot Luxury Fabrics That Make Clothes Look Expensive.

The colors always feel soft

Another thing I notice in The Row outfits is that the colors rarely interrupt each other. Even when the outfit mixes black, cream, brown, grey or navy, everything still feels very tonal and blended together.

You almost never see harsh contrast, loud prints or very saturated colors. The palette stays muted, which is probably why the outfits still feel elegant even when the silhouettes are oversized or relaxed.

I also think this is part of what makes the brand so recognisable. The colors create a very consistent mood across collections, and the pieces naturally work together even when the styling is extremely simple.

And honestly, I think this is one of the easiest things to apply in real life. Outfits usually look much more refined when the colors feel connected instead of competing with each other.

The accessories don’t distract from the outfit

The accessories are probably my favorite part of the The Row aesthetic because they are so simple, yet they completely change the feel of the outfit.

A lot of the bags are very soft with almost no visible hardware, which makes them blend naturally into the look instead of standing out too much. Even something like the Margaux bag became iconic without really looking like a typical “it bag.” There are no loud logos or obvious details. It is mostly the shape, the leather, and the proportions that make it feel luxurious.

The same thing happens with the shoes. The sandals are usually very minimal, the loafers are clean and slightly elongated, and even the boots feel understated. Nothing looks overly trendy or overly feminine. The lines are simple, but they make the whole outfit look more refined.

I also think The Row is very good at choosing accessories that match the mood of the clothing. The bags, shoes, sunglasses and jewelry all feel soft and understated in the same way as the outfits themselves. This is probably why everything looks so cohesive together.

Nothing feels overstyled

One of the reasons I find The Row aesthetic so appealing is that it never feels too perfect.

The hair is usually natural, the makeup is understated and the styling feels slightly undone in the best way. The outfits look lived in instead of heavily curated for social media.

I actually think this is what makes the aesthetic feel modern. It is polished, but there is still ease to it.

Sometimes when outfits are too perfect, they lose elegance and start feeling performative. The Row avoids that completely.

How I would recreate The Row aesthetic without buying The Row

Personally, I would focus much more on silhouette and fabric than on buying specific pieces.

A few things that instantly make an outfit feel more “The Row” to me:

  • relaxed trousers with beautiful drape
  • long coats with soft structure
  • understated leather bags
  • elongated shoes with clean lines
  • tonal outfits without harsh contrast

Here are some pieces I found that I think are good to recreate The Row’s aesthetic:

And honestly, I would avoid anything that feels too trend-heavy or overly styled. The Row aesthetic works because it feels effortless and understated.

That is really the whole formula. The clothes look luxurious, but they never look like they are trying to impress anyone.

Final thoughts

I think what makes The Row so appealing is that the aesthetic never really depends on trends. The outfits are usually very simple, yet they still feel more refined than most heavily styled looks.

And honestly, once you start paying attention to the details, it becomes easier to understand why. The softer tailoring, the long silhouettes, the understated accessories, the muted colour palette, the fabrics that move beautifully. Nothing is overly dramatic on its own, but together those choices completely change how the outfit feels.

I also think that is why so many people are drawn to The Row right now. The clothes look elegant without looking overly polished, and luxurious without feeling obvious about it.

At its core, the aesthetic is less about buying specific pieces and more about understanding proportions, restraint and styling. That is really what makes The Row outfits stand out, even when they are built from very simple basics.
